Tonight, as part of Hibbleton Gallery's Summer Film Series, we are screening the film "The Artist is Present." The screening begins at 7pm and is FREE. The theme of our June series is "radical women in the arts." Award-winning documentary filmmaker Steve Elkins, who selected the films, will give a short talk before the screening.
In this award-winning documentary, Serbian artist Marina Abramovic explores the limitations of the human body, often risking her life in the process. Marina and Ulay started an intense love story in the 70s, performing art out of the van they lived in. When they felt the relationship had run its course, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last big hug in the middle and never seeing each other again. At her 2010 MOMA retrospective, Marina brings her work to a kind of culmination, challenging herself to be fully present to each stranger who sits in front of her, sharing eye contact in silence. Ulay arrives unexpectedly.
Here is the trailer for the film. Hope to see you there for this unique chance to see a beautiful film projected on a large wall, in a relaxed environment.
