The following is an excerpt from a work-in-progress called The Town I Live In.
When I was in grade school, I used to have soccer practice at Beechwood School, right next to Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton. I remember sometimes thinking, "This place smells weird." In retrospect, it was probably the smell of burning human flesh: "With the growing popularity of cremation in the United States, especially in California, Loma Vista has...performed over 18,000 cremations" (Fullerton: A Pictorial History 1994 edition--omitted from the 2002 reprint).
